Hygge and Happiness – 3 Ways To Do Winter Hygge Right

If you haven’t heard of Hygge yet, it’s a Danish word and concept that means coziness, warmth, friendship and is a concept that helps Danes get through their long and dark winters. And Danes, apparently know how to cheer things up as Denmark is consistently ranked as one of the happiest nations on earth. Winter Hygge is at the center of it’s idea.

Hygge is defined as, “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.”

A cultural part of Denmark, the concept caught on worldwide via the internet around 2016 and you can see why. Sometimes embracing ideas like hygge is the only way to get through the winter.

So What is Hygge About?

Winter Hygge is about warm drinks, inviting over friends and finding warmth and congeniality by the fire.

The New Yorker says, “Winter is the most hygge time of year. It is candles, nubby woolens, shearling slippers, woven textiles, pastries, blond wood, sheepskin rugs, lattes with milk-foam hearts, and a warm fireplace. Hygge can be used as a noun, adjective, verb…Hygge can be found in a bakery and in the dry heat of a sauna in winter…It’s wholesome and nourishing, like porridge…”

So if you want to embrace hygge and take your winter game up to the next, coziest level, follow these steps below:

Twinkle Lights

Twinkle lights are just for Christmas. Adding a touch of twinkle light on top of your mantle, around a window frame or on the top of the cupboards adds a little brightness and magic that is perfect for winter. When the lights get low, and the sun fades, having your twinkle lights brighten up your room will emit the ultimate hygge glow and feeling to your living space.

Twinkle lights can go anywhere! Try taping them to the inside of a beautiful, oversized clear jar for display, around the top of your child’s teepee or at the edges of room.

Warm Drinks

Nothing quite says cozy and therefore, hygge, like warm drinks. Don't limit yourself to Hot Cocoa. Mix up your winter drink routine with herbal teas, orange cider or a plethora of other warm drinks. Then grab your socks and cuddle up by the fire! Here is a list of recipes for healthy hot drinks beyond the ordinary options.

Friendship

You can't separate Hygge from the feeling of family and friendship. What a better time than the cold winter to invite a bunch of friends over for that game night you’ve been putting off?

To incorporate winter hygge best, make delicious treats and invite friends over.  Play some soothing music and enjoy friendship and love. What breaks up the cold better than that?
