You may have not realized how many things you can clean in your dishwasher. Using your dishwasher to clean non-dish items is a smart and efficient way to sanitize many household items you use every day.
Why Use The Dishwasher?
There are many reasons to use the dishwasher to clean non-dish items.
- Convenience. Popping something into the dishwasher is so much easier than toothbrush-cleaning something or even washing it with a rag. Using your dishwasher is a quick shortcut to clean a variety of household items very well.
- Sanitizing. Most dishwashers have a steam / heat clean option that is a complete sterilizing cycle. If you utilize a similar cycle it can actually sterilize items you wouldn’t be able to clean as well on your own.
- Regular Cleaning. If you get in the habit of using the dishwasher to clean your non-dish items, you’re more likely to get into a proper schedule of cleaning items that need it. If it’s not so easy, or not a habit, you might not think about sanitizing items that should receive it regularly.

This is a trick of mothers everywhere! There are many baby related things that you can clean in your dishwasher. You can pop in plastic or other types of dishwasher safe toys, baby hygiene products such as nail clippers, hair brushes and combs (after they have been cleared of hair), baby medicine syringes, silicone baby items and more. Using the dishwasher to wash your baby items assures you that the items will be sanitized, safe and regularly clean for your child.
Silicone and Other Kitchen Items
Silicone products such as silicone oven mitts are an amazing tool in the kitchen. They keep you safe from heat and have multiple uses. Did you know you can drop them in the dishwasher? Popping silicone mitts, mats and other products keeps them free of germs, grease and ready to go when you need them. Other kitchen items include non-utensil kitchen tools and even the grill rack on your oven!
Bathroom Items
Other things you can clean in the dishwasher that you may have not thought of are bathroom items! Make sure you rinse the items and only wash with other bathroom-related objects. But the dishwasher is a great way to sanitize many things you use in your bathroom. This includes soap dishes, heat-safe toothbrush holders, hair ties, cosmetic sponges and hair brushes. Find hygiene items such as shower loofahs, cosmetic brushes, contact lens cases and even retainer cases and mouth guards! Keep those items that touch your body sanitized and clean on a regular basis!
Other Household Items
Household things you can clean in the dishwasher include: many tools, rubber boots, golf and other types of balls. You can also clean dog toys, dog collars, flip flops, ceramic trinkets and figurines and more!
